31st January 2009

Chadwick Street Car Park and Hollins Lane/Stockport Road Junction

We are delighted to report that on the 28th January 2009 the councillors agreed a second phase of the project for Chadwick Street Car Park Refurbishment.

‘There will be no changes to the Hollins forecourt or junction’

The involvement of the many Marple residents who gave their support and attended the Marple Area Committee meeting on 26th November helped enormously in bringing the final proposal of the project to a satisfactory conclusion and we would like to thank them all for their help.

CHANGE TO

TRINITY STREET

As the final stage of the refurbishment of The Chadwick Street Car Park the One way direction in Trinity Street has now been reversed to allow traffic to enter to the car park from Stockport Road. This means that all traffic from the car park must now exit on to Church Lane.

Do you have any views on this change?

Have you encountered any problems in entering the car park or of leaving it?

Members' Meeting 23rd June 2009

Sustainability, ‘When the Oil Runs Out'.

At the Members' Meeting on Tuesday 23rd June, Councillor Andrew Bispham gave a most interesting and thought-provoking talk to members on this subject which was well received. He wound up with these words:

'There is a moral imperative that we take this issue seriously and broaden the debate before circumstances force us into an emergency reflex action'

STOCKPORT CONSERVATION AND DESIGN AWARDS               11.10.09

On behalf of the society, Colin Fox (the Civic Society’s honorary Architect) was a judge for the Stockport Conservation and Design Awards. There were eight judges being a mixture of Architects, Planners, representatives of the Civic Societies and the Heritage Trust. We looked at fifteen sites around the borough, including housing, schools, a yoga studio, the bridge in Brabyns Park and Hollins House in the Memorial Park, Marple.

The winning entry in the design category was a house in Bramhall that had to go to appeal to obtain planning permission and the Market Hall won the conservation award. Although the Iron Bridge was praised in terms of the restoration of the old bridge, the requirements of Health and Safety had taken over the final solution being over-engineered on what is a clearly designed lightweight cast iron bridge. The judges commented that “the new inner rails have taken the fun out of the bridge; you cannot play ‘pooh sticks’ on it.”

Hollins House has had major roof repairs and the reinstatement of the full chimney stacks.  The high quality of the restoration work and lead detailing has been acknowledged and the work has been submitted for a number of awards.

Update No 9

Dan Bank Wood has been identified as an Ancient Woodland

and will in the future be cared for on a regular basis with a

10 year woodland management plan.

Phase 3 of the works will start in mid-June for a period of

about 12 weeks. During this period Dan Bank will be closed

to all through traffic between the hours of 7 o'clock each

evening until 6 o'clock the next morning (as happened for one

week in August last year) to carry out the final stabilisation of the road.

Details are currently under discussion and the final arrangements will be announced in May.

Civic Voice – the new Civic Trust

On the demise of the Civic Trust last year a small group (the Civic Society Initiative) set about consulting local societies to see if there was support for a new body to represent us nationally.

The result is the forthcoming launch of a new body to be called “Civic Voice”.  Our committee has followed the developments closely and consulted other societies.  The result is that at our last committee meeting we voted unanimously to affiliate to the new organisation.

Safer Stockport Partnership

At the Society's Open Meeting in the Marple Library on 29th September a presentation was given by Elaine de Fries, East Area Cordinator for the Partnership, supported by Insp. O'Brien and PC Potter of Greater Manchester Police.

Current Situation

Marple Civic Society has been in consultation with British Waterways since July 2009.

Our last meeting was on 19th January and the latest joint statement has recently been issued (Please Click Here)

We presented an update on Marple Wharf recently, in the form of a poster display, to members and friends in Marple Library; over a hundred people attended and gave us their views. We are in the process of collating those views and comments which will help to guide us on the way forward. These results will be discussed with BW at our next meeting on 22nd April.
