31st January 2009

Chadwick Street Car Park and Hollins Lane/Stockport Road Junction

We are delighted to report that on the 28th January 2009 the councillors agreed a second phase of the project for Chadwick Street Car Park Refurbishment.

‘There will be no changes to the Hollins forecourt or junction’

The involvement of the many Marple residents who gave their support and attended the Marple Area Committee meeting on 26th November helped enormously in bringing the final proposal of the project to a satisfactory conclusion and we would like to thank them all for their help.

CHANGE TO

TRINITY STREET

As the final stage of the refurbishment of The Chadwick Street Car Park the One way direction in Trinity Street has now been reversed to allow traffic to enter to the car park from Stockport Road. This means that all traffic from the car park must now exit on to Church Lane.

Do you have any views on this change?

Have you encountered any problems in entering the car park or of leaving it?

Please let us know on mail@marplecivicsociety.org.uk.

Members' Meeting 23rd June 2009

Sustainability, ‘When the Oil Runs Out'.

At the Members' Meeting on Tuesday 23rd June, Councillor Andrew Bispham gave a most interesting and thought-provoking talk to members on this subject which was well received. He wound up with these words:

'There is a moral imperative that we take this issue seriously and broaden the debate before circumstances force us into an emergency reflex action'

STOCKPORT CONSERVATION AND DESIGN AWARDS               11.10.09

On behalf of the society, Colin Fox (the Civic Society’s honorary Architect) was a judge for the Stockport Conservation and Design Awards. There were eight judges being a mixture of Architects, Planners, representatives of the Civic Societies and the Heritage Trust. We looked at fifteen sites around the borough, including housing, schools, a yoga studio, the bridge in Brabyns Park and Hollins House in the Memorial Park, Marple.

The winning entry in the design category was a house in Bramhall that had to go to appeal to obtain planning permission and the Market Hall won the conservation award. Although the Iron Bridge was praised in terms of the restoration of the old bridge, the requirements of Health and Safety had taken over the final solution being over-engineered on what is a clearly designed lightweight cast iron bridge. The judges commented that “the new inner rails have taken the fun out of the bridge; you cannot play ‘pooh sticks’ on it.”

Hollins House has had major roof repairs and the reinstatement of the full chimney stacks.  The high quality of the restoration work and lead detailing has been acknowledged and the work has been submitted for a number of awards.

              Dan Bank Stabilisation       December 2009

Update No 8

Phase 2 has now been completed with work on the Dan Bank slope to improve drainage and strengthening of the edge of the brook. The Oldknow Stones have been taken up for safe keeping until the works are complete when they will be reinstated.

A short test stabilisation length of reinforced concrete was installed alongside the road in August when the road was closed overnight in one week.

Phase 3 will commence in the early summer in 2010 when it is

anticipated this will take about 12 weeks to complete the stabilisation work and the rebuilding of the road.

The road will be resurfaced later when it has had time to settle.  Discussions are now taking place on the arrangements to minimise any disruption and details will be announced in the spring.

The Civic Societies Initiative Convention          October 30th 2009

Since The Civic Trust went into Administration much thought is being given by individual Civic Societies to set up a suitable organisation to give the movement appropriate national representation. This Initiative organised meetings around the country to collect general views on this objective with the aim at arriving at a consensus.

The Chairman Alan Postill and his wife Gillian attended a Convention held on October 15th and 16th at Blackpool at which a report entitled Own the Future was considered.

This report showed that there is a need for a central national body fully representing the Civic Society movement and core funded by the Societies to have a different feel from the old Civic Trust.

This is a start and it was agreed to continue exploring the ideas in this report with the aim of reaching a conclusion by Easter 2010.

The full report is available on

             www.civicsocietyinitiative.org.uk

To indicate that there is much to discuss we have received an email from the Chairman of the Association of Civic Societies in the North West who raises a number of reservations.

  MARPLE WHARF

Current Situation

Marple Civic Society has been in consultation with British Waterways since July 2009.

We last met with them on 7th December and are due to meet with them again on 19th January 2010.

The Regeneration Team at Stockport MBC has recently taken an interest in Marple Wharf and its potential and they will enter into discussions with British Waterways this month.

The latest joint statement is attached (Please Click Here) but British Waterways has offered to provide a comprehensive review, including diagrams describing the work to date and the current situation.

When this is available we will arrange a display in Marple Library for members and friends to view. Members of our steering group will be on hand to explain and answer questions. We expect the meeting will take place towards the end of January or beginning of February 2010.
