MARPLE WHARF
Proposed Development by British Waterways
Marple Civic Society is in an extended consultation with British Waterway (BW) to look at all viable options for Marple Wharf.
The MCS Steering Group has had two meetings with BW on 16th July and 11th September 2009 and is due to meet with them again on Monday 26th October 2009
At the end of the September meeting we had discussed, and agreed in principle, the following ideas, although no final decisions have been taken:
· The Grade 2 listed warehouse to be refurbished as offices.
· A new single storey nursery to be built for ‘Sure Start’, an SMBC initiative. The building would be set back from the canal with a small play area to the front.
· Space would be provided for parking and a drop off point for New Horizons and the nursery behind the warehouse.
· The Toll House to be used for a heritage/visitors centre.
· New Horizons to remain on site, moored on the arm of the canal under the warehouse.
· Public access to the canal on both sides of the warehouse.
See plan below of the site showing the above ideas.
Remaining issues for discussion at the next meeting on 26th October 2009
· Should the remaining two plots (plot 2 & 3 shown on the attached plan) be used for houses? If not, we need a viable scheme to replace them.
· Provision for boating facilities.
We are investigating the following ideas as possible solutions:
· A Stockport MBC scheme to house a canoe, kayak and cycling centre on part of the remaining site (plots 2 & 3). This is a new idea and we hope to develop it further before the next meeting with BW.
· New boating facilities at plot 2 in front of the above possible new build. There are other possibilities for boating facilities to be moved to one of the buildings alongside the service road but they would be much more convenient and accessible along the canal on the wharf.
We need your support – your letters/emails really matter – please let us have your views
