Adoption of New Constitution – 1 October 2008
The Society held a Special General Meeting on the 30th September 2008 in Marple Library. The Society adopted a new constitution (replacing one adopted in 1964) based on a model constitution provided by the Charity Commission.
The new constitution takes account of changes in legislation over the years since the Society was formed; in particular it clarifies the responsibilities of trustees.
The objects of the society remain the same as does the name.
We are pleased to report that we now have an archivist to look after our extensive collection of photos.
New member Graham Drew has agreed to take on the job of sorting and scanning the Society’s photos after responding to our web site advert for an archivist.
He is a keen photographer with an interest in the photographic history of Marple.
We are delighted to welcome him to the Society, both as our archivist and as a member.
Carnival Charities Committee 11th October 2008
On 3rd October Secretary Chris Parr, accompanied by Margaret Kenworthy, spent an enjoyable evening at Marple Cricket Club as guests of Marple Carnival Charities Committee. The event was held to distribute donations to Marple based organisations from the proceeds of the 2008 Carnival.
We were first treated to a well constructed quiz (which we didn’t win!), followed by a Tombola. Then followed the presentation of donations.
The Civic Society received a cheque for £50, presented by the Carnival Queen, Laura Wynne, for which we are very grateful and will put to good use.
The other local organisations also received similar gifts -
St. Martin’s Christmas Tree Festival 5th November 2008
The Civic Society has once again been invited to take part in the St Martin’s Christmas Tree Festival on 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th December 2008.
We are delighted to accept the invitation and look forward to taking part in this seasonal event.
The Festival takes place in the beautiful and historic St Martin’s Church, Marple Bridge.
The event is a lovely start to Christmas so please come along and share in the festivities.
