SCROLL BRIDGE COMPLETED June 2008
'It is with great pleasure that we can report the completion of the reinstatement
of the Scroll Bridge in Brabyns Park. After seventeen years it is now in use as an
element in the proposed Multi-
Chadwick Street Car Park and the Hollins, Marple
We have viewed the proposals and plans during the recent consultation exercise and took part in a site visit with Councillors to assess the scheme.
Subsequently, the Committee and our Honorary Architect have discussed the proposals at length and the Civic Society have written and indicated our objections which are summarised here.
1. The changes to the road layout at the junction of Hollins Lane and Stockport Road will be detrimental to the town centre
2. The changes to the road layout will adversely affect traffic flow in the centre of Marple.
We support the principle objective to encourage the use of the Chadwick Street car
park, particularly by shoppers, and we suggest the main reasons for its low usage
as being the parking charges (N.B. the Co-
We have suggested to the Council to go ahead with the car park improvements but hold fire on the highway changes at the Hollins in order to assess the effect on car park usage.

'CHADWICK STREET CAR PARK, MARPLE March 2008
Plans are under consideration by the Council to improve this car park in the centre of the town which, in addition to the refurbishment of the car park itself, may involve some significant alterations to the traffic system in the vicinity. We understand the council are considering reversing the direction of traffic in Trinity Street and making some alterations to the junction of Hollins Lane and Stockport Road which we fear will have a serious impact on the traffic system and the centre of our town. Below is a summary of our objections sent to the Council'

UPDATE ON CHADWICK STREET CARPARK
The Society’s position on the proposed changes to Marple centre to allow access to Chadwick Street car park from Stockport Road is given in the news item above dated March 2008.
Despite further discussions and a site visit, accompanied by a SMBC Traffic Engineer, the council’s proposals remain substantially the same and are, therefore still unacceptable to the Society.
For example how can commercial vehicles coming from the Strines direction enter Trinity Street without having to get on to the crown of Stockport Road to turn the sharp angle in?
If you agree with us that the proposals for these major changes to Marple centre are unacceptable and are willing to offer support please contact any member of our committee or alternatively send your comments through the You Need Us page on this site or by direct email to mail@marplecivicsociety.org.uk .

Also will you be content with the line of traffic from the west always being single file through the lights and the addition of an island allowing little space for traffic turning right into Hollins Lane to wait for the traffic in the opposite direction to clear.

UPDATE 12th. JULY 2008
This is the latest scheme that we are aware of and we still have the same reservations
stated above. You will note that they are showing the one way signs on Trinity Street
pointing in the wrong direction compared with the declared intention and we are still
not happy with the plan for a single line for the westbound traffic on Stockport
Road. We also note the out-
