Charity Reg.
No. 236593
Marple Civic Society was started in 1961 by four architects who lived in Marple, with a constitution based on one suggested for the whole country by the Civic Trust, which had been set up a few years earlier.
At this time Marple was an Urban District in Cheshire with its own Council. In 1974 a major reorganisation of Local Government resulted in Marple becoming part of the East Area of The Metroplitan Borough of Stockport in the County of Greater Manchester, with the Council based in Stockport.

Under this new system Planning Matters are handled by a department in Stockport, but the local atmosphere has been maintained, so that many applications are now considered by an Area Committee of the six Councillors representing the two Marple Wards.
Marple Civic Society is a member of The Civic Trust and also it is a Registered Charity (Registered Number 236593). Its aims and objectives are stated in the accompanying page in this section

The first project undertaken by the Marple Civic Society was in connection with a major countrywide plan to get canals back into use for recreational purposes.
This task was to tidy up and landscape the bank for the basin on the Peak Forest Canal just below the Posset Bridge on Stockport Road, Marple.
This was completed in 1967 and formally opened by Her Majesty The Queen in the following year.
